Gently undulating luxuriously sprung fairways leading to large fast greens must be negotiated through 98 strategically placed bunkers, while hillocks, wild grasses and gorse await wayward shots. Measuring 6,350 metres, the 1st tee and 18th green are conveniently situated just a wedge shot from the hotel and clubhouse.

The use of dunes and natural terrain should please the most ardent links purists. Elevated tees and greens, blind approaches and doglegs, not to mention typical links sea breezes, keep you thinking through every round.

The land was originally part of the Jameson family estate (of Irish Whiskey fame) and the house itself was called St. Marnock's House.

Edward VII often visited the Jamesons and on his last official visit in 1907 he unveiled a plaque which was designed specially for the occasion of the marriage between members of two great distilling families, Jameson and Haig. The plaque is still to be seen in what was the secret south garden.

The Jameson family had a nine-hole golf course on the site over 100 years ago; this golf course is now part of both the Portmarnock Golf Club and the Bernhard Langer designed Golf Links.

There is a multitude to see and do in the Fingal area using Portmarnock as your gateway. Locally, you can enjoy the beautiful coastal walks, explore the seaside villages of Malahide and the quaint fishing village of Howth.

Malahide is designated as a national heritage town. The town is very attractively laid out; its streets radiate from the central diamond and are lined with colourful shops, merging with terraces of graceful homes, neat gardens. At the waterfront  a beautiful Marina and coastal walks.

The town's major tourist attraction is Malahide Castle Demesne and of course the many restaurants and bars that constitute the vibrant social life of the town Howth is a fishing and yachting port. Its attractions are easily appreciated, particularly at the coast. Howth Head gives fine views of Dublin Bay and the Wicklow Mountains or Boyne Valley beyond.

In the bay is the rocky bird sanctuary and monastic island of Ireland's, to which boat trips may be taken in summer. Cliff paths lead around the coastline, through Howth village and its ruined abbey, and past Baily Lighthouse. The 15th-century Howth Castle is inland, partly ruinous, but with fine rhododendron gardens.

A small, but impressive, transport museum can be visited near the DART railway station, featuring Howth's famous open-topped tram. Howth's pubs, hotels and fish restaurants make it a pleasant outing.
