West Lancashire Golf Club, founded in 1873, is one of the ten oldest clubs in England and boasts one of the most natural and under-rated links found anywhere in the British Isles.  Of the links, Bernard Darwin wrote in 1922: “The West Lancashire Golf Club of Blundellsands is decidedly one of the more venerable of English Clubs. The course lies on a noble stretch of golfing ground which is second to none, not even to the East Lothian or to the country around Troon or Prestwick.”

Some seventy years later famed writer and course designer, Donald Steel, was equally beguiled: “Only in Britain can one sample the true flavour of seaside golf of which West Lancashire is a perfect example. Within the framework of the coastal dunes and the railway, a glorious balance unfurls. There are humps and hollows, greens on plateaux and greens in dells, contrast and shelter in the inland holes and everywhere a sea of rough sandy wilderness to punish the wrongdoer. On a summer evening, as the sun casts its shadows on the links, the shipping slips quietly by on the Mersey and there is time to reflect the distant beauty, the realisation occurs that the West Lancashire enjoys the best of both worlds.”

Founded in 1873, West Lancashire Golf Club is the oldest golf club surviving in the county of Lancashire and is among the top ten oldest golf clubs in England.

The club was founded by members of the Royal Liverpool Golf Club and some became members of both clubs. West Lancashire Golf Club is twinned with Royal Montreal Golf Club, Canada's oldest golf club, also founded in 1873.

In 1885 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club organised a Grand Tournament for amateurs which became, in 1886, The Amateur Championship. West Lancashire Golf Club was one of twenty four clubs that contributed to the cost of the trophy which bears their names. The first winner was ALAN MACFIE who was also a member of West Lancashire Golf Club.

In 1901, West Lancashire Golf Club Secretary, HAROLD HILTON, 'the greatest amateur score player England has ever produced', the verdict of golfing critics on his long career, won The Amateur Championship at St. Andrews. In all he made a record thirty three appearances in the Championship. He reached seven finals and won four of them. His 'annus mirabilis' was in 1911 when he become the first person to win The Amateur and The US Amateur in the some year, at Prestwick and at Apawamis, NY.

This great links course measures 6,964 yards, and is set in natural seaside terrain with immaculate greens. Eleven of the holes measure over 400 yards so by any standards it is a true championship course. It is also a course of contrasts - humps and hollows, shelter and bleakness. On calm summer evenings it is easy to forget how the winds blowing in from the sea can turn a game around and challenge even the most accomplished golfer.

West Lancs can boast not one but two Open Champions who have served as its club professional. The first was Sandy Herd, who won at Hoylake in 1902, and the second was Arthur Havers, who defeated Walter Hagan by a stroke a Troon in in 1923. Havers also made three Ryder Cup appearances for Great Britain.

The clubhouse overlooks the ninth and eighteenth greens, giving panoramic views to the north and west over Anglesey and the Welsh Hills. Its long balcony is an ideal place for weary golfers to have a reviving drink or snack, whilst watching the sun go down over West Lancashire”

Signature Hole

Hole 16: 447 Yards, Par 4

The most difficult hole on the course. The green lies obscured behind a dense line of trees that stand to the right of the tee. A hefty blow of almost 300 yards is required for any chance of a clear view of the green for the second shot. If you come up short the only option is to play your short and left, and then chip up and onto the dancefloor. Thankfully, there are no bunkers around the green - which is a small mercy considering the difficulty in reaching it!
